Mehlepi (Mahleb in Arabic) is an unusual Greek spicewith a distinctive, fruity taste. Mehlepi is made from the inner kernels offruit pits of a native Persian cherry tree. For many Greeks, the sweet smell ofmehlepi always suggests the aroma of freshly-bakedtsoureki, a traditional sweet bread with mehlepi baked for GreekEaster. Mehlepi is also used in holiday cakes and cookies.
